Curlista’s Grow Out Challenge
Who’s up for a Grow Out Challenge?
I’ve been natural for awhile(about 4-5 years) and have never been really concerned with length - but now I am! That means no cutting and taking really good care of my hair and body. My goal is to have stretched APL (arm pit length) hair by October and I’m hoping for BSL (bra strap length) by January 2010! I’m not even sure if this is do-able but based on looking at people’s fotki accounts it seems realistic. Once I reach BSL I’m hoping to get a great curly hair cut. Since growing healthy long hair is about a good hair regimen and a healthy body – so I feel this challenge will improve my overall health.
Here’s what I plan on doing to grow my locks long:
- Co-washing 2-3x per week
- Deep Treatments 2x week
- Keeping hair well moisturized and sealing ends
- Wearing protective styles – roller sets, china bumps, twists, buns, etc. – to help maintain length and prevent breakage
- Wearing satin cap at night
- Minimizing heat (blow dryers and flat iron, etc)
- Drink 8 glasses of water daily (For me, Crystal Light will make it go down easier) – it helps improve hydration and flushes the body of toxins, chems and impurities
- Eating healthy – well balanced diet chock full of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids
- Exercise 4-5 per week (yay more hot yoga!)
- Taking a multi-vitamin daily

Dear Curlita,
I’m last by 2 days, but I accept your challenge. I cut my hair in 2006 (summer) Rihanna short -minus the side tail and Its grown back to a little past my shoulders, but in 2008 I started putting texturizers in which isn’t as harsh as a full relaxer, but I want the natural back. its still thick with some of the natural characteristics and I too want a longer length for a cute-si hair style come the fall. I’ll keep ya posted.
please do keep me posted – and if you find any magic potions to get your hair growing – let a sista’ know!
hi, i joined the challenge…but i have a question. are you trimming you ends during this time? i haven’t trimmed at all…but alot of people have been telling me that will do more damage than good. my concern is that i will need to straighten my hair in order to trim and i really don’t want to use a flat iron this summer. dilemma!!
Hi Karimah, I haven’t been trimming my ends – but that is just me. I will probably dust my ends and try to get rid of any split ends. As for straightening your hair – have you considered doing a roller set and then a silk wrap. I will be posting on that soon.
Great concept, and many thanks for taking the effort to publish it; really opened my eyes for some new perspectives that I hadn’t thought of before.
