One to Watch: Ayo

ayoSo I’m really loving this new song “Longely” by singer-songwriger Ayo.  She’s already taken Europe by storm and now her music is slowly making its way across the pond to North America.  Banana Republic even featured her on their 2009 Spring-Summer campaign.  Her soulful sound reminds me of Sade (gee, will she ever make a comeback -- love her!) infused with a lil’ island flavour.

Born in Cologne, Germany -- her mother was a Romanian gypsy, her father a DJ from Nigeria.  In Yourba, her name means Joy.  Currently living in Manhattan, Ayo is married to Afro-German reggae artist Patrice.  The couple are parents to a baby boy named Nile.

Anyhow, I’m digging her -- loving her afro and the whole euro boho thing she has going on. If you want to check her out live, visit her website for a complete list of tour dates.  In the meantime check our her single ‘Lonely’.

Baby Bump Watch for Jill Scott

Heart & Soul Magazine

Jill’s living her life like it’s golden on the April/May cover of Heart & Soul magazine.  In full on curly mode -- the R&B diva and new mom-to-be sports a slim fitting white dress with a printed cardi wrap.  Sexy mama! Ms Scott and her drummer fiance Lil’ John Roberts are expecting a baby boy next month.  Congratulations John  & Jill.  Enjoy Golden!

Curly Corbin

Corbin Bleucorbin_bleu_-_speed_of_light_official_album_cover

Actor, dancer, model Corbin Bleu is back – this time its not for High School Musical.  Last week the multi-talented singer/songwriter released his second album entitled “Speed of Light” – a follow up to Bleu’s debut solo album “Another Side”.  And this time around, the 20-year old Italian-Jamaican-American hearthrobe is ditching his signature big bushy fro for a sleek slicked back mature look. Looks like he’s his combing his hair back to achieve this look and probably using curl products that have more hold to them.  Thoughts?

How do you prefer Cobin's Curls?

One to Watch: Laura Izibor

let-the-truth-be-toldLaura Izibor – I’m totally digging this girls boho chic vibe – and of course I love, love, love her hair.  Born in Dublin, she’s an r&b soul singer who is creating a lot of buzz in the industry – Rolilngstone mag is calling her ‘an artist to watch’.  Her music has been featured on a ton of tv and films – including: Grey’s, Seven Pounds, Nanny Diaries, P.S. I love you, etc.  She’ll also be releasing her debut disc ‘Let the Truth be Told’ this year.  She definitely has a Corrine Bailey Rae vibe.  I’m sure we will be hearing more about her as the year progresses.  Hopefully, I can find out her hair care secrets soon.  Read what Ebony wrote about her in their March issue.   Watch and listen.

India Irie

519mjefgicl_ss400_She’s back with a new album Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics - a follow up to her  Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship album.  I remember sitting down and talking to her when she came to town and we really connected.  Truly a fab chick!  The two-time Grammy winner’s new disc  includes the singles “Chocolate High,” featuring a duet with Musiq Soulchild, and “Therapy,” featuring reggae recording artist Gramps Morgan (luv Gramps and the rest of the fam).  She also covers Sade’s song “Pearl”.  Anyhow in honour of her album release this week, I’ve decided to post a throwback.  Enjoy!
