Grow a Fro

Gro A FroLast week Friday, I had the pleasure of going to the Gro Fro event hosted by HoneyFig and TorontoStyle.com.  Sherika – big thanks for extending the invite!  Now, for any hair obsessed individual like myself – the night was very informative – where the presenters covered everything from hair history, hair myths and some much need style advice. The event was very well attended – and I think everybody really enjoyed themselves.  Its nice to see that Toronto’s Natural Community continues to grow.  Shout out to the Toronto Bellas – Faith and Mona who I chilled with on Friday night and Sabrina – a local member I met from the Naturally Curly Hair Forum.  Sorry I never took pics – but you can check some out here.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Allison Rose – presented the History of Hair

  • the anatomy of hair
  • what shampoo, conditioners and styling products do
  • the importance of reading product labels – understanding what ingredients do what and making notes on what ingredients benefit your hair and which ones do not
  • gave an excellent answer on why natural hair is not so taboo in the workplace – its just in our heads

Patience of Chiggy’s Touch – presented on styling

  • natural hair should be cleansed once per week, co-washed 2-3x week
  • to promote growth – keep your scalp clean
  • tired of shrinkage, consider the Keratin treatment – research and then think about it for 3 months before committing
  • apply product to soaking wet hair, then blot with micro fibre towel
  • DO NOT use a regular towel – it can break your hair
  • a twist out is an excellent way for transitioners to style their hair
  • Moroccan Oil is great treatment for growing strong, long hair
  • Grow your hair to your desired length – then get the cut your hair into a style

World Natural Hair Show

ATL – the 2009 World Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show is coming…

World Natural Hair Health & Beauty Show

Jam packed with tons of events and exhibitors – read what the organizers have to say about the event…

Everyone is excited about the 2009 World Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show on April 4-5, 2009. This year we are planning an even more exciting show thanthe last. Our halls will be filled with excitement, beautiful people, beautiful fragrances, music and a sea of information on natural hair, health and beauty. The interest in natural hair continues to grow as it has become an official choice for hair care for African Americans and consumers globally.

The world now sees natural hair in a more positive light as mainstream visuals of  actors, sports figures, models, doctors, anchormen/women, children, etc. are wearing a variety of styles with natural textures. Even weave-wearers are choosing hair with tighter curl patterns as they too want the look of natural hair. More people are embracing their natural beauty-and history repeats itself again as other nationalities desire the look of natural styles as well. Now the show has even more to offer as larger numbers of people both nationally and globally embrace the beauty of natural hair.

Rip the Runway recap

As I posted last week, BET’s Rip the Runway taped this past weekend in NYC at the Hammerstein Ballroom.  From the pics, it looked like it was a pretty fly event – Slowly make sure you are taking notes.  Host Joy Bryant rocked some make up (yay!)  She notoriously shows at big Hollywood events completely fresh faced and thank goodness she changed it up this time and put some on.  She’s gorgeous with or without but I appreciate some glossy lips and blush every now and again.  Bryant’s co-host Derek Luke looked hot in suit and tie.  Anyhow, TI, Keri Hilson, Mavado, The Dream, Bobby V, Busta, etc performed.  Looking forward to watching it on the tube in March.

Rip the Runway

riptherunwayIn just because news…BET’s annual Rip the Runway event is taking place in the NYC this Saturday, February 21st at the Hammerstein Ballroom.  Oh how I miss NY!  Hosted by the lovely, yet no make up wearing Joy Bryant and Derek Luke the event features designers Akoo, Protégé’ and Project Runway’s Korto Momolu (yay!) and Johnny Vincent Swimwear.  They have a slew of artist on deck set to perform including TI, The Dream and gangsta for life Mavado (big up the reggae massive).  Guaranteed for fly fashion and of course fly hair – must watch.  (Anissa, I’m sure we will watch together as usual).  Hopefully I can post some new pics on Monday.

Rip the Runway will premiere on BET on Monday, March 2 at 9 PM ET/PT and will re-air on Thursday, March 5 at 8 PM and Friday, March 6 at 10 PM
